‘Fishers of Men’
A temporary light installation.
Woodbridge Chapel, London EC1.
September 2004.
Outline
Using the two levels of the chapel, the rituals of the fishermen are highlighted through a biblical allegory.
Downstairs, a series of screen-printed portraits (derived from the earlier piece ‘Fake Fishermen’) were spaced symmetrically around the walls, while in the darkened upper gallery, an installation of their cast hooded sentinel forms bathes the viewer in a rich optical display. A banner was sewn: “Fishers of Men” that reflected the Baptist aesthetic. This was placed above the pulpit where the minister would preach.
To gain access to view the work, the public had to negotiate the steps of the pulpit and stick their head through an opening in the false ceiling. This gave the sense of the viewer being in both spaces at once.
Concept
This installation was about exploring how I could take “Fake Fishermen” into a new site and make it specific to that space - to build on the essence of that piece.
